WATER TIPS
One gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation.
Children, nursing mothers, and sick people may need more water.
If you live in a warm weather climate more water may be necessary.
Store water tightly in clean plastic containers such as soft drink bottles.
Keep at least a three-day supply of water per person.
Hot Water Heaters

Hot water heaters are a potential source for emergency water supplies, as most water heaters hold 30 to 50 gallons of water. To access the water perform the following steps:

1. Shut off the gas or electricity
2. Turn off water flow to the tank by turning the water flow shutoff valve (usually at the top of the tank) to the right.
3. Locate the water valve towards the bottom of the tank. Turn the valve to the left to drain water. Turn it back to the right to shut off the water flow. In many cases, a garden hose can be attached to the water valve to drain the water.

(Water heaters in earthquake prone areas should be secured to wall studs using nylon straps or metal binders on the lower, middle and upper sections of the water heater.)
